In this photo, we explore the unusual use of food such as onions during the civil unrest in Beirut. The onion became an essential protagonist as it was used to recover from the tear gas effects by smelling it.
the photo was taken in 2020 during the unrest after the blast of Beirut.

Revisiting the notion of the Levant – in Arabic ash-Shām or al-Mashriq – brings the shared common heritage to the fore. Beirut Blast

On the 4th of August, at 6:07 pm, the lives of hundreds of thousands of Lebanese residents changed forever. A container of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded in the port of Beirut, causing damage miles away from the blast site. The effects were even reported to be heard in Cyprus and the explosion is deemed the most powerful non nuclear explosion in the world to date. As a giant mushroom emerged followed by a pink cloud taking over the Beirut skies, our streets and neighborhoods filled with our homes, favorite bars and restaurants, quickly turned into an apocalyptic war-like zone, reminiscent of the civil war times.
